What is periodontitis – and how does it develop?
Each tooth is not rigidly fixed into the bone, but suspended by elastic fibers (the periodontal ligament).
Healthy gums form a tight collar around each tooth, acting as a barrier to bacteria.
When plaque isn’t removed regularly, it can lead to inflammation of the gums (gingivitis).
If untreated, this can progress to deeper structures, causing loss of bone and connective tissue – resulting in periodontitis.
The result: teeth may become loose and eventually be lost.
Warning signs – when to seek help:
• Bleeding gums while brushing
• Red, swollen, or sensitive gums
• Persistent bad breath or bad taste
• Gum recession, teeth appearing “longer”
• Loose or sensitive teeth
• Shifting teeth or newly formed gaps
• Pus near the gum line
